Cooking Up Saskatchewan 2017

Cooking Up Saskatchewan 2017

Another successful Cooking Up Saskatchewan (CUSK) competition is in the books!  Students in Food Studies 10 & 30 and Commercial Cooking started with a competition in their own school, with the winning group advancing to the Provincial Competition at Saskatchewan Polytechnic in Saskatoon that took place Saturday, April 29th.

The Provincial Competition included two parts; a culinary presentation where each group prepared a soup, salad, or appetizer and an entrée which each featured chicken, and an oral presentation on chicken and how it is a safe food source grown in an ethical manner in Saskatchewan.  Students learn budgeting, meal planning, presentation, and speaking skills by participating in this event.

Students were evaluated by four judges, two kitchen preparation judges who marked on Safety & Appearance and Food Preparation, and two tasting judges who marked on Food Presentation and Oral Presentation.  The judges were chef’s Derek Cotton and Steve Driver from the kitchens at Saskatchewan Polytechnic Culinary Arts program, D’reen, owner of D’reen’s Catering, and Kari Tosczak, CEO of Chicken Farmer of Saskatchewan.

The impressive meals, prepared by the students, included delicious items such as stuffed chicken breast with eggplant garnish, Thai chicken, and guacamole.  Congratulations to the winning schools and their teachers:
